Volkswagen Look to Future with Electric Saloon
Volkswagen have set their sights on the future with the introduction of a new saloon based heavily on the I.D. Vizzion which is set to provide an enhanced replacement for the now discontinued Phaeton.
The move to introduce the I.D. Vizzion will see Volkswagen return to the executive saloon for the first time since 2015 and will go head-to-head with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Tesla’s Model S.
The I.D. Vizzion will be used to showcase that the German giants are at the forefront of the electric push and will be a pioneering model for the future of the brand. Although an official name is yet to be given, the new model will be heavily influenced by the I.D. Vizzion, and will boast a long body and wheel-base thanks to Volkswagen’s extremely flexible MEB platform.
Volkswagen have stated that the new saloon will not be fully focussed on autonomous driving, that will be left for future models, and instead they wanted it to be the basis of future models in terms of design and powertrains. The model is expected to reach showrooms by 2022.
As previously mentioned, the versatility of the MEB platform allows for a hugely dynamic car. The new electric saloon will come with a range of battery options and drivetrain configurations. The ability to have an electric motor on each axle will mean that four-wheel drive should also be a probability.
The powers that be at Volkswagen have already indicated they expect all future electric models to have a range in excess of 250 miles off a single charge, however for larger models such as the I.D. Vizzion, we can expect a range in the region of 330 miles.
By the time the Vizzion lands in showrooms in 2022, it will be in good company with VW’s other electric cars: the I.D hatch which will go on sale in 2019 and the Crozz SUV just a year later.
